The well-known Orange Crush Festival, promoted as a coastal celebration for HBCU students throughout the South, made a powerful comeback to Tybee Island following a two-year relocation to Jacksonville Beach, Florida.
During its hiatus, the festival’s legacy, which began in 1988, and stories of past Orange Crush events expanded, attracting an unparalleled number of attendees to the barrier island.

The City of Tybee reported that around 11,555 vehicles and 40,000-50,000 individuals arrived on the barrier island on Saturday.
Students and HBCU alumni from Washington D.C. to Florida enjoyed the scorching sun as they strolled through the streets, sipped beverages and ate at local bars, posed for photos with pythons draped over their shoulders, sang from the balconies of their holiday rentals and car windows, and gathered at the pier where the day’s emphasis was on positive vibes and enjoyable experiences.
